LEGISLATION INTRODUCED TO EXTEND "CONRAD 30" J-1 WAIVER PROGRAM FOR PHYSICIANS
The Conrad 30 program which allows each state to sponsor up to 30 J-1 waivers per year expired on May 31, 2004. The Access to Rural Physicians Improvement Act of 2004 (H.R. 4453), introduced by Representative Jerry Moran, would extend the program for one year and exempt recipients of these waivers from the annual H-1B cap. This bill passed the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration, Border Security and Claims on June 3, 2004 and has now moved on to the House Judiciary Committee.

STATE DEPARTMENT RETRACTS ERRONEOUS MEMO REGARDING "CONRAD 30" J-1 WAIVER PROGRAM
The Waiver Review Branch of the State Department retracted a previous memorandum dated June 16th directed to the J-1 Waiver Coordinators at the State Departments Health which stated that the Conrad State 30 J-1 Waiver program had sunset. The corrected memorandum issued on June 18th affirmed that Foreign Medical Graduates (FMG) who acquired J-1 status prior to May 31, 2004 remain eligible for Conrad 30 J-1 Waivers.
